What Causes Sun Spots?

Sun spots are caused by prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. When the skin is exposed to UV rays, it produces more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. The excess melanin can clump together, forming dark spots on the skin.
