What is botox?

If you’re considering getting Botox, you’ve come to the right place! One common question we get when patients come to see us for Botox is, “How many units do I need?”. The number of units will be different for everyone and also depends on things like age and what areas you are looking to target. In this blog post we’ll cover some of the Botox basics along with how many units of Botox you might need. With the right information you will be ready to book your appointment at Images Med Spa and take advantage of our new patient Botox special which is 20 units for $199. Even better, you’ll become an expert on everything you need to know before getting Botox!

WHAT IS BOTOX?

Botox’s official brand name is Bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Created and founded by Allergan and also the most common treatment in the beauty and Aesthetics industry. While there are other brands that also address the same concerns and work similarly Botox was the first to hit the market. Botox is a toxin, which tends to scare people away, but it only a small quantity of botox is ever injected to your body. For example, the common amounts of units can range between 20-50 units of Botox per area. For Botox to be truly “toxic” for you, you would have to be injected with 2,500-3,000 units – and that would never happen!

When Botox is injected it doesn’t just roam through your body, it can only travel 3cm from the point of injection. The amazing part of Botox is that such a small amount can get the job done. We always say less is more because within 6 days of your treatment you can say hello to smooth ageless skin again.

HOW MANY UNITS OF BOTOX DO I NEED?

These numbers are based on an estimated amount someone might get but this differs from person to person. During your appointment, your provider will asses and provide a personalized recommendation to achieve the best results!

  • Eyebrow Lift: 2 – 5 units
  • Forehead Lines: 10 – 30 units
  • Frown or Glabellar Lines: 10 – 25 units
  • Bunny or Nasalis Lines: 5 – 10 units
  • Dimpled Chin: 2 – 6 units
  • Crow’s Feet (per side): 5 – 15 units
  • Smile Lift (corners of the mouth): 3 – 6 units
  • Neck Wrinkles: Units may vary

HOW DOES BOTOX WORK?

Over time we all make certain facial expressions that essentially end up working against our favor. Repeated expressions such as squinting, smiling, laughing or frowning can create lines to form on the face which turns into wrinkles. While there is nothing wrong with natural beauty, you shouldn’t feel bad about wanting to look good. This is where Botox can help. It is the only anti-aging treatment that works effectively, quickly and is also a preventative measure for future wrinkles. When Botox is injected into the skin it works by blocking the muscles from contracting. The treatment lasts between 3-4 months, however everyone is different. Metabolism comes into play and for some it may be processed a bit faster or slower depending on the person. You will want to schedule your appointments after the Botox wears off to keep up with the results and prevent new wrinkles from forming.

BOTOX ISN’T JUST FOR AGING

Anybody can benefit from Botox and it’s not just for treating signs of age. Botox can help with migraines, gummy smile, excessive sweating, grinding teeth, defining lips and jawlines, and treating neck bands and wrinkles. If any of these are of concern, keep reading below to see how Botox can benefit you.

Migraines can be a pain and damper your quality of life if it’s not taken care of. Botox is proven to be beneficial to those who struggle with ongoing chronic migraines. It is even recommended by doctors. Botox helps treat migraines by blocking the pain signals to the brain.

A gummy smile appears when the upper lip is slightly higher causing the gums to show when you smile. Botox injected above the upper lips will relax an overactive upper lip and decrease the gummy smile.

The same way Botox blocks the muscle from contracting it can also lessen those who produce excessive sweat. The nerve responsible for signaling the sweat glands is blocked and you no longer have to worry about sweating through your favorite tops.

The masseter muscles can make your jawline appear fuller from clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth at night. Botox injected into your jawline can relax those muscles and create a slender looking face. This can also prevent jaw pain that is also caused from grinding the teeth at night from stress.

Did you know you could define your lips with Botox? A popular treatment is the lip flip! Those who are looking for a subtle lift to their lips can receive a small amount of units above the upper lip and in just 6 days the lips will appear fuller and lifted.

As we begin to age some of us will experience horizontal wrinkles that wrap around the neck. Neck wrinkles tend to enlarge or even protrude as you get older. Neck muscles are connected to some of the facial muscles, so the neck muscle can actually pull your facial features downward. One example is smile lines, these can begin to drop lower because the neck is pulling them down. Your answer to treat this concern once again is Botox!

HOW IS BOTOX A PREVENTATIVE MEASURE?

It is becoming increasingly common for people in their 20s to receive Botox as a preventative measure. Did you know that if you start early on you can prevent future wrinkles from appearing as well as becoming deep. While you may not actually have as many wrinkles in your 20s as you would in your 30s, 40s or later down the line. If you start earlier you will need less units of Botox and you will weaken the muscle early on which prevents future wrinkles and fine lines.
